One of the UK's most heartwarming events, the Virgin London Marathon, is only days away! But if running 26 miles dressed as a bottle of ketchup isn’t for you then read on for HTB’s pick of the best race-side pubs to visit! After all, watching all those runners is going to be thirsty work!
A recent statistic by The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) stated that 28 pubs a week are closing around the UK; that is up by two pubs a week. As such, Hire The Barman are highlihting ONLY traditional London pubs along the route.
So, this Sunday show your 'sip'-port and pop in for a pint!
MILE #1 The Sun in The Sands, 123 Shooters Hill Road SE3 8UQ
And they're off! This newly refurbed pub-restaurant sits at the point where the blue and green racers join together so, if you are there to see a loved-one, make sure they're not a red runner or you’ll miss them!
MILE #5 The Rose of Denmark, 296 Woolwich Rd SE7 7AL
The view of the track here is superb and this lively boozer will be open and serving drinks from 8am on Sunday, with a BBQ outside all day! A strong contender for one of the best boozers to spectate from!
MILE #6 Hardys Freehouse 92 Trafalgar Road SE10 9UW
A London Marathon favourite, these guys open for breakfast at 9am and Tom from the restaurant recommends you book quick as they’ll be packed to the rafters! You’ll start to see runners pass here at around 10am.
ALMOST AT MILE #9 The Surrey Docks 185 Lower Rd, London SE16 2LW
A great location with plenty of space for viewing, on the bend just before mile 9. A standard Weatherspoons establishment, open from sunrise on a normal day, is stretching itself to 7am for earlybird spectators, serving alcohol from 9am.
HALF-WAY! The Draft House 206-208 Tower Bridge Road SE1 2UP
Just before the infamous halfway mark on Tower Bridge stands The Draft House. A popular spot so it's always best to plot up here early!
BETWEEN #16 & #17 The Ship Inn, 290 Westferry Road E14 3AG
A spacious race viewing point, this pub really makes the effort with live music playing outside and a BBQ for when you get hungry! Opens at 10am.
MILE #23 The Walrus and Carpenter 45 Monument Street EC3R 8BU
Just off the beaten track this pub is stil only a stones throw from the action and it is a secret favourite with the weekday city workers who know about it! Open from 11am (or maybe slightly earlier).
ALMOST THERE! St Stephens Tavern, 10 Bridge Street SW1A 2JR
If you really want to make the most of your visit to the 'Big Smoke', then spend some time in this posh pub with plenty of London heritage. Nicknamed 'The Politician's Hangout', it is next door to Big Ben and opposite the Houses of Parliament. These guys aren't taking any bookings and expect it to be busy from lunchtime.
The Virgin London Marathon starts from 9am this weekend on Sunday 13th April 2014. Good Luck to all who are running!
We will see you for a well deserved beer at the finish line!
